This is one I have seen several people ask about lately and a code I deal with on a daily basis. As you know this is a code that is used with DM.

The key thing to know about this code is based on your understanding of Type 1 and 2 DM.
Type 1 DM 250.01 means they MUST have insulin. Their body does not produce it properly.

Type 2 DM 250.00 may or may not use insulin.

Alright, you are not coding just for your payer but also for statistics. Don't forget that.
If a patient is Type 1 then you can add V58.67 but it is understood they use insulin.
For 250.00 Type 2 however it is not so you will want to add V58.67 if you see insulin in the med list. Big heads up though. Do NOT use this code if they are just starting insulin. So for a new med of insulin this does not apply.

As Laureen always says, Happy Coding
